(BNG 2023) Investigating Student Experiences of a Block Teaching Model in STEM courses

Implementing the block teaching model at Southern Cross University included a redesign and redevelopment of learning materials, teaching delivery, and assessment. This research aimed to investigate the impact of these changes on student results and experience and whether it varies for types of STEM courses. A quantitative analysis was conducted on enrollment, satisfaction, success, GPA, and feedback rating collected over two academic years – before and after the introduction of the block teaching model. The results identify statistically different results in enrollment, satisfaction, GPA, and success for identified types of courses. Our analysis also indicates an impact of class size over these factors. Independent qualitative analyses using Nvivo and BlueML on student feedback data have identified several dominant themes, such as teaching, time, and assessment.
