Set default values for field mapping symbols in reports
The Piping Settings allow both built-in and user-defined field mapping symbols in a report to be replaced with a default caption in situations where the field mapping symbol may not be able to pipe data to the report such as when:
- no response has been given for a question
- the piping key is empty or invalid
Creating a default value for each field mapping symbol ensures that if a value cannot be piped into the report for a given field mapping symbol, the report will still be contextually coherent and understandable to the viewer. For more information on default piping/field mapping symbols, see Default piping/field mapping symbols.
Follow these steps to create a default caption for a field mapping symbol.
- Navigate to Reports - Content - Piping Settings.
- Select Add Default Caption.
- Enter a field mapping symbol.
- Enter a default caption that corresponds to the field mapping symbol in Step 3.
- Select Apply.
- Select Save to finish.
It is possible to add one or more field mapping symbols to a default caption.
However, if the field mapping symbols in the default caption are invalid, then the field mapping symbol itself will be displayed instead of a more understandable value.
For example, say there is a field mapping symbol [R$NAME]
and it's default caption is [R$FN][R$LN]
, if the raters first name is known, but the rater's last name represented by the field mapping symbol [R$LN]
does not exist in the database for this rater than the following would be displayed on the report: "George [R$LN]"
.
