Alert topics use cases - Higher Education

Higher education use cases

The Alerts feature helps universities identify and respond to potential risks surfaced in user feedback. Each alert is categorized into topics, enabling institutions to take informed, responsible, and timely action. The following outlines typical follow-up responses for each alert category:

Discrimination

When alerts indicate possible bias or unequal treatment based on protected characteristics (e.g., race, gender, disability), the university may refer the case to the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion or Human Resources. These offices review the concern, investigate as needed, and take corrective or educational actions to promote fairness and inclusivity.

Danger / Threat

If an alert signals a potential threat of harm to individuals or property—such as mentions of violence or weapons—campus security or law enforcement is notified immediately. The university may initiate emergency protocols, conduct a threat assessment, or increase safety measures in the affected area.

Mental Wellbeing

Alerts that suggest emotional distress, burnout, or self-harm are referred to student counseling or mental health services. Trained professionals may reach out directly to the individual (if identifiable), conduct a wellness check, and provide confidential support resources.

Physical Safety

Feedback that identifies physical hazards (e.g., unsafe structures, poor lighting, or hazardous areas) is reviewed by facilities management or campus security. Repairs or mitigations are prioritized, and in critical cases—such as reports of active threats—emergency services are contacted immediately.

Harassment / Mistreatment

Reports suggesting ongoing or targeted harassment are reviewed under Title IX or HR procedures. Follow-up actions include formal investigation, interviews, and, where necessary, protective or disciplinary measures to safeguard the individuals involved.

Inappropriate Language

When feedback includes offensive or unprofessional language, alerts prompt content moderators or supervisors to review the communication. The focus is generally educational, encouraging awareness of tone and promoting more constructive communication.
