Enable analytics data collection

Knowing where responses are coming from, when they are received compared to when they are invited, the elapsed time to complete a questionnaire, the browser, device and OS that raters are using can be invaluable information allowing project administrators the ability to focus their limited time and resources on the elements that will have the most impact on their raters.

Enable analytics

Response Tracking Analytics is an optional feature of the Fillout task that can be enabled project by project for maximum flexibility and privacy.

Enable Blue Response Tracking Analytics

Data elements

A variety of data can be collected by Response Tracking Analytics. Each element can be enabled or disabled independently of any other depending on need. However, Blue will only collect data on the elements that are enabled.

IMPORTANT

Blue will only collect analytics data when those analytic elements are enabled.

Channel (available in Response Rate Monitor)

Channel identifies where the user obtained the link that they used to access the questionnaire. There are five possible values for this metric:

  • Email - a link generated by Blue that is used in invitation, reminder and other email communications.
  • SMS - a link generated by Blue that is used in invitation, reminder and other SMS communications.
  • Portal pop-up - a link generated by Blue that is passed to the Blue connector for use in the login pop-up available in some LMS's.
  • Portal course link - a link generated by Blue that is passed to the Blue Connector for use on the course page for that task.
  • Portal grade blocking - a link generated by Blue that is passed to the Blue Connector for use on the pop-up that prevents users from viewing their grades until the task is completed.
  • Portal course blocking - a link generated by Blue that is passed to the Blue Connector for use on the pop-up that prevents users from viewing their course until the task is completed.
  • Blue home - a link generated by Blue that is available on the Blue home page and the task list page for Blue users.
  • QR code - a link that is generated by Blue for the QR code available from the project.
  • Thank you page - a link, generated by Blue that is added to the thank you page upon completion of another task.
  • API - a link generated by Blue for activity received through an API.
  • Undetermined - links that don't have a definitive source reference such as public links that are posted on a website or if a link has been copied and then pasted into a browser.
  • Not captured - not captured appears if the analytics was disabled at the time the task was completed.
NOTE

Client side browser privacy settings may remove the URL referral parameter from the user agent which prevents Blue from identifying the channel that the user is coming from causing the system to mark the channel as Undetermined.

Location data (available in Response Rate Monitor)

Location data is used to track the physical location of the user when they submit their responses, determined by their IP address. Locations are based on an IP range defined by the system administrator in an XML file.

Browser (available in Response Rate Monitor)

Browser data identifies which browser (Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc) the rater used when they submitted their responses. This information is obtained from the user agent information broadcast by the user's web browser and cannot be modified.

Operating system (available in Response Rate Monitor)

Operating system data identifies the operating system (Windows 7, OS X 10.1, Linux, etc) that the user was using at the time they submitted their responses. This information is also obtained from the user agent information broadcast by the user's web browser and cannot be modified.

Device (export only)

Device data identifies the type of hardware device that the user used to submit their responses. This information is obtained from the user agent information broadcast by the user's web browser.

Invited date (export only)

This is the date that the invitation email was sent to the rater. A date is only recorded if an invitation email is sent. If invitation emails are re-sent or subsequent invitation emails are sent, then this date will be updated. Reminder emails will not affect this date.

Started date (export only)

The date and time that the user first accessed the questionnaire. The start date will only be recorded if a save action occurs. A save action can occur if a user clicks any of the buttons to navigate to a different page of the questionnaire, if they respond to any of the questions and save their responses, if they submit their responses, or if the questionnaire times out while open regardless of whether or not any action is performed.

Submitted date (export only)

This is the date and time that the user submits their responses. At the time that the user submits their responses, other analytics data like device, browser, location, etc are updated with the current user information available. If the user updates their responses at a later time, analytics data is only updated if they submit their responses again, saving their responses will not update the analytics data.

Export Blue analytics data

All response analytics data that has been captured for a project, can be exported to a CSV file that can then be imported into any data analysis software for further analysis. For each set of responses Blue will include subject, secondary subject, group, and rater information along with the specific analytics data that has been enabled.

NOTE

Analytics data is collected on a per task basis, as a result, tasks that contain multiple secondary subjects will appear multiple times in the CSV export, however only the initial secondary subject will have analytics data associated with it. Analytics data for the remaining secondary subjects will display NA and can be disregarded.
