Create a multilingual project - XML language file

Blue supports the distribution of questionnaires and reports in multiple languages based on user preference. See the list of languages supported by Blue.

Captions and messages can be translated field by field as the project is being created, or by using an XML file. This topic explores how to use a project's XML language file.

In order for a user to automatically receive notifications in their preferred language, the user datasource must have a field that is properly mapped to the language field and the proper language code must be used. Language codes can be found in the list of language supported by Blue.

POWER TIPS

Use the XML language file to copy a questionnaire from one project to another project when the project definitions are different.

NOTE

To configure a multilingual project and to learn more about field-by-field translations, consult Create a multilingual project - field by field.

BEST PRACTICE
  • To read XML efficiently, we recommend the use of software that supports XML like Notepad.
  • While it is possible to build a language file completely from scratch, given that the data in the project gets overwritten when importing the language file back into Blue, complete the information in the project Info and Definition tabs.
  • Do not build the questionnaire with the XML language file. Instead, create the question blocks required in the project (with or without their true content) and edit in the XML file.
  • Exporting the XML language file is the best way of providing most of the content that needs to be translated to the office translator or 3rd party. Having the translator enter content directly into the XML file can save everyone involved in the content creation process a lot of time.
CAUTION
  • Placeholder questions required when using a question bank and date/time questions are not included the XML language file. Therefore, if you work mainly with a question bank, we recommend you avoid using the XML language file.
  • For Course Evaluation Multiple Secondary projects, the XML language file does not include the subject selection available in question configurations (Question About [subject]). Remember to set these to the proper subject after importing the language file.
NOTE

If the user’s preferred language is not supported in the project (as defined by the mapped language field in the user datasource), correspondence will be provided in all languages that the project supports. However, if the user doesn't specify a preferred language, the default language specified in the Blue license will be used..
