Norm across subjects

The Norm across Subjects element is to compare an average of a particular subject against a "norm" of a group such as department or college. In Norm across subjects, the "norm" of a group is calculated as an average of subject averages (in other words, average of averages).

For example, if you are creating a department-level report, this group element called Norm across subjects is used to get the average of all the course averages in that department.

Enabling Apply Report Filter will apply report filters to this group element.

The above image is taken from a regular course-instructor evaluation. There is one rater group (Students) which must be selected to enable the block to function properly. In a 360 implementation or in a scenario where multiple groups exist, any combination of raters can be selected to define the group element.

  • Course Field lists all available course fields in the datasources that are used to group responses and calculate the relevant averages.
  • Instructor Field lists all available instructor fields in the datasources that are used to group responses and calculate the relevant averages.

Subject enables the project manager to select one of two options

  • Include all subjects: averages out all evaluation subjects present in the project.
  • Only include subjects selected in the report: includes only the subjects that are specific to the report at hand.

Score enables the project manager to select one of two options

  • Score average (mean) - calculates the average of all responses across selected subjects. Average of subject averages.
  • Sum Total - sum total of rater groups, calculates the sum of all scores provided in the responses of all subjects. Sum of subject averages.

Report block configuration and usage

Question - Score

In a score block, Norm across Subjects elements will enable report readers to quickly compare the results across questions, as all selected subjects have been condensed into one final figure. Ultimately, other group elements can be selected also to compare them with each other.

Cross Category - gap analysis

For this type of block, it is common to compare two different statistics relevant to each question/category, and report on the gap (difference) between both. These statistics can be several types of group elements including Norm across Subjects. This type of block can be used to determine the gap between different rater groups, or for example, getting the gap between the Norm across Subjects and the entire department or faculty.
